MASTER CLASS WITH JAY-Z
I was just about weened off cable until I heard about this [from my mom]!
Chock full of quotes, Oprah Winfrey Network's new show Master Class has me thirsty for cabel...
FAVORITE QUOTES
"... When you learn, teach. At our best we are all teachers..." - Maya Angelou
"Failure is a great teacher and, if you are open to it, every mistake has a lesson to offer"-Oprah
"Excellence is being able to perform at a high level for a long period of time."-Jay Z
"... If I was going to be successful, I had to be sucessful with myself. I couldnt be sucessful doing what other people were doing.... The worst thing to be is as sucessful as someone else. That's a very difficult thing to upkeep and very tiring..." -Jay
"... Be true to yourself... It's not that simple... You have a belief in yourself... and in most cases a naivety in what you can contribute..." -Jay
Most of all.... I can't get over Oprah talking about Jay-Z in such an admirable way. Too cool...

THE SOUND TRACK TO MY CREATIVITY
"Do you know your girlfriend is a bird?"
Incontrary to the reviews, I think My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is incredible!!!
I'm enjoying everything from his word play, to choice of featured artists, right down to the art direction.
peep album & single artwork after cut

RIHANNA AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS 2010 PERFORMANCE
The "What's My Name" performance totally made me like the song. I got hyped when I heard Only Girl getting mixed in, but was lil disappointed on that performance/ dance section. Overall cute performance and pretty major production. Go Ri Ri
Side Bar- I'm listening to her new Loud album now. It's no Rated R, but danceable. I heard Rihanna's last album sales suffered because she was a lil too dark and edgy for the masses. This album seems to have a bubble gummy, lightness to it. I suppose that could be attributed to salability OR new found happiness. I'll probably pull some singles from Loud, and keep rocking with Rated R [G4L is my jam!].

REAPPROPRIATION OF MISOGYNY
New term.
Totally fitting.
Watch this
****Note: heavy swearing
The juxtaposition of preppy, mostly white girls, singing a Dr. Dre song in proper chorus structure is awesome but, a part of me believes it's totally statged. I bet these girls are from around the way, stole all the preppy clothes they could find [like New Edition back in the day], and bullied some classmates into giving up their tennis racquets.
Who knows! It is funny tho.
Listen to the Original after the break

ABBEY LINCOLN
Jazz Singer
1930-2010
She started out as a Hollywood starlet, but got turned out by the civil rights movement and became an icon for change. Her career started in 50's, playing sexy vixen roles and even donned a dress previously worn by Marilyn Monroe. By the 60's she began collaborating with jazz musicians and was closely connected to the fight against racism. Her style evolved from pinched waist, jeweled evening gowns, to trendy shift dresses and kente cloth, finally to her signature top hat with all black.
She sites Billie Holiday as a large source of inspiration
RIP momma

I GO STUPID
Featuring my bf's lil bros, Rich Starz [rhyming] and J Starr [dancing]. They are so cute, spitting mad fire, flipping and flexing. I see younger versions of my man in each of them and just want to squeeze their cheeks! But seriously, I am proud to see them showcasing their talent but, even prouder of the video production they put together, themselves, to do so. When I was their age the idea of me doing my own thing was as foreign as India. Props dudes, keep going.

OUT MY MIND,
JUST IN TIME...
Some pics and a video clip from Erykah Badu's recent NY Performance.
She first came out in [what's becoming] her signature top hat and black Burberry trench [from the Window Seat Video] with over sized gold feather earrings, full finger rings, and black patent leather ankle boots.
When Erykah Badu took her trench off to reveal she was, in fact, wearing sweat pants, I swear I heard the faintest gasp from the crowd but, Badu flashed an "I'm doing me" sort of look back and continued on with her amazing show. Even in a yellow t shirt and rolled up sweats, she had crazy stage presence [without any real dance moves] and her voice was on point.

P.S. The background singers were dope
