HANDMADE GOOD[S]

Last Sunday I checked out Bust magazine's one day holiday craft fair at the Metropolitan Pavilion. It was definitely not your moms flea market. The crowd was young and hip and the products were assorted and quirky. Animal print chocolates, mean greeting cards, refurbished vintage medallions, epoxy food pins, angry women art and all types of jewelry... It was awesome! Like every little thing you would hunt for at a hometown street fair was all in one place in plain sight. While I found myself is awe of almost all the wares on display, one vendor stuck in my mind, New York Couture. A small clothing line run by a cutie named Cassie K. The line has been featured on MTV, WWD, and on Katty Perry to name a few places and people. I love the way the collection combines humor, glamor and badass sexuality.  To compliment the super creative designs, Cassie K casts the perfect models, applies amazing hair and makeup and selects picture perfect locations for her photo shoots. Maybe I love the looks so much because they look like Fafi illustrations come to life.

PRETTY LACE

Gone are the days of lace being exclusive to lingerie. The fine French fabric has come to be expected on high end evening wear, but lace's big break out moment was when women, mostly thin, wore slips over jeans or opaque tights on the streets.  Now it's getting even more real! Lace is being applied to designer ready to wear, inserted into contemporary apparel and even stunntin on shades.

1st sign of a quality lace: variated pattern
now imagine the caliber of the machine that could achieve this [that is if it's not hand made]

hayden P. and Madonna were spotted wearing the same Caroline Seikaly dress.
2nd sign of a quality lace: unique motif. Patterns outside of floral arrangements are hard to find.
Hayden worn the dress fitted, highlighting the nude effect and the flaming paisley motif.
Madge rocked it with a leather jacket to add some edge cause sometimes she can look old.
[I do love her, but sometimes she looks her age]

3rd sign of a quality lace: a soft hand. The hard stuff will give you a rash.

simple and sexy

4th sign of a quality lace: uneven spaces between floral arrangements. Keeps the eye interested.

THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE SHOULDER TREND

Balmain.

The Spring 2009 collection featured glamorous cocktail dresses and uniform jackets with exaggerated shoulder pads that referenced the 80's power shoulder and futuristic space style at the same time. Fashion execs, celbs, and fast fashion chain stores cought on immediatley discussing, wearing, and knocking off the acclaimed collection last summer. This season Christophe Decarnin, Balmain Creative Director, continued to include his most noticible design detail, the new power shoudler, updating it's shape to  delicately angled points. A lot of the looks have already been featured on the red carpet and in magazines, but it's always cool to see how a designer presents the pieces and compare them to how the world interprets them.

The Balmain runway show also mixed in casual staples, like an over sized white t shirt, with high shine separates creating very wearable, cool girl, high street looks. Reoccurring design details, outside of  "the shoulder", included small, Chanel like quilting, and split leg herem pants.

The Spring 2010 collection didn't disappoint either! Decarnin seemes to have pulled inspiration from vinatge warriors.  Graceful Gladiator meets tattered Civil War hero dipped in shine : D.

SCULPTORS ALWAYS MAKE THE BEST DESIGNERS

Gemma Slack started out seeking an education in fines arts when she was encoraged to try fahion design. After graduating with honors from the Lodon College of Fashion and completing a 2 year apprienceship with Gareth Pugh, Slack started a gothic inspired line named after herself and debuted it last spring. Her second collection for Fall/ Winter 2009 is specifically inspired by the religious crudsades. What's most interesting about Gemma Slack's collection is the way she translates her sculpting sensibilities and inspiration, through the use of untreated, stiff leather and oversized trims.

IN NY ALL YOU REALLY NEED IS A GOOD COAT THAT MAKES A STATEMENT

SANS, a brand that usually presents a full line of apparel and outerwear, decided to offer a collection of only outerwear this season. The designers Lika Volkova and Alessandro DeVito told Clear mag they "did not feel it necessary to produce a full wardrobe collection this season beacause each coat creates an entire look".  Especially in New York, a good coat that keeps you warm and makes a statement is your first priority. SANS clearly has the visual statement part down and it is echoed in the way they achieve warmth. Faux fur and merino wool were used to create the shells of SANS coats. Buyers have the option of filling the outerwear with wool, silk, or recycled plastic. When asked why such a high end avant garde label opted to design with faux fur, Devito explained, "Generally, poeple are buying fur coats not for the aesthetic, but for the dollar value. We wanted to do something interesting instead."
